This sign on Lake Monona at Law Park is how Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) decided to “inform” shoreline anglers about the risks of eating fish from Lake Monona, known to be contaminated with mercury, PCBs, PFAS, and many other poisons–so they can make educated choices about which fish to eat and feed to their families.

“Fish from these waters may be harmful to eat”??? “Many fish are not safe to eat more than once a month”???

Which fish shouldn’t be eaten more than once a month? Who shouldn’t eat them more than once a month? What contaminants are in them? What are their health effects?

Would this sign prompt you to be concerned, get out your phone while standing there, and scan the QR code to get more information? Especially if you are not a child or person who is pregnant or nursing (who are unlikely to be out there fishing in the first place)?

No. Perhaps that’s the point?
