Dane County is proposing to build a new landfill and “sustainability campus” because its existing landfill (Rodefeld Landfill-southeast of Madison, northeast of the Highway 12/18 interchange) is reaching its maximum waste capacity, and will be full and capped by 2030. The proposed landfill would be south of Rodefeld on part of the Yahara Hills Golf Course (see map below).
A group of area residents called Neighbors for a Better Landfill opposes the proposed landfill at this site and has already obtained nearly 500 signatures on a Change.org petition.
MEJO supports these citizens’ efforts. They have raised many legitimate and critical concerns about the public health, environmental, economic and community impacts of this landfill, which will be 2,200 feet from a planned school. To date people in communities that will be impacted by the landfill have not been adequately informed about the wide range of potential negative implications, nor engaged in discussions and decisions about them.
What do the Neighbors for a Better Landfill want? From the website: “There is still time for neighbors to influence this process…Our aim now is to slow down the process so that all can be informed on the consequences for all communities involved and understand the full cost to the residents of Dane County.”
Please go to the NBL website to learn more about the project and what actions you can take, including signing the Change.org petition!
